The teams have had a nine-day break during which England opted to travel back to their team base in Abu Dhabi to rest and recharge. India will likely be boosted by the return of all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja, who top-scored in the first Test.

Going into the third match, England captain Ben Stokes will be playing his 100th Test match, while India off-spinner R Ashwin will be chasing down a significant milestone as well.

Ashwin’s Test wicket tally stands at 499, and he will be looking to join an elite 500-wicket club in Rajkot. Only eight players have achieved the mark so far, with Sri Lankan spinner Muthiah Muralidaran on top, with a staggering tally of 800 wickets.

Bowlers who have taken 500 Test wickets
Name Team Wickets Bowling Average
Muthiah Muralidaran Sri Lanka 800 22.7
Shane Warne Australia 708 25.4
James Anderson England 695 26.3
Anil Kumble India 619 29.7
Stuart Broad England 604 27.7
Glenn McGrath Australia 563 21.6
Courtney Walsh West Indies 519 24.4
Nathan Lyon Australia 517 30.7

Of these players, Muralidaran is also the fastest to reach 500 wickets, doing so in 87 matches. Ashwin has played 97 so far and if he picks up at least one more wicket in his next two matches, will become just the second player to reach the milestone in less than 100 Tests.

England seamer James Anderson is also likely to be in action in Rajkot, and he will be chasing his 700th wicket.
